THE SPEAKEASY in the subway
Tucked away in discreet corners of the city, some of
New York's bars (nicknamed
speakeasies, a tribute to bars of the Prohibition era) cater to a discerning and refined clientele, offering them an enchanting evening in an intimate, vintage-flavored setting.
La Noxe, a
secret bar, is one of the most cherished speakeasies in the city. Nestled within the Big Apple subway system (beneath the 28th Street stop of the local red line #1,) it was unveiled in 2020 by entrepreneur Jay Perie, who previously owned a successful dance club in Williamsburg.
To create his New York hotspot, Perie leaned on his broad international experience, expertly blending
Spanish, French, Japanese, and Mexican influences to present his patrons with what he describes as a true "oasis of diverse cultures and influences."
In this extraordinary atmosphere, dominated by orange and purple hues (it feels almost like being a guest in an original 70s artist's studio), La Noxe provides refined cocktails and a small but carefully curated menu inspired by
global and fusion cuisine, loved by both New Yorkers and tourists alike.
The cocktail list at this covert speakeasy bar features timeless classics along with a
selection of personalized drinks. The original
Forbidden Love (aloe vera juice, lemon, and vodka) and the sweeter
La Noxe's Banana Daiquiri (banana liqueur, charanda, and spicy Jamaican Bitters) are absolutely must-try.
The selection of
spirits, wines, and champagne is sophisticated, catering to the most demanding of palates. At the same time, the list also includes non-alcoholic drinks, amongst which the spicy and refreshing
Placebo Effect, made with lemon, ginger, and fresh blackberry jam, stands out.
La Noxe's menu also sets itself apart from other New York venues. Accompanying the drinks is a delicious
selection of seafood nibbles, such as the
seabass tiradito (a Peruvian dish featuring raw ingredients thinly sliced). Regulars recommend the Galician-style grilled octopus, flavored with paprika.
Alongside these mentioned dishes, there are other
Iberian-inspired tapas, including vegetarian options, cheeses, and charcuterie. However, fish (cooked or raw) is the main character in this original speakeasy of the Big Apple.
You can enjoy the cozy and exclusive ambiance of La Noxe from Thursday to Saturday (between 5:00 PM and 1:00 AM,) and from Sunday to Wednesday (starting from 6:00 PM in this case.) Be aware of the
waiting list, which can sometimes be long. Those wishing to spend an evening in this New York treasure would do well to plan ahead!
