Arizona Itinerary: A 5-Day Tour Proposal

JOURNEYING AMONG   saguaro cactus and red canyons

An Arizona itinerary promises an unparalleled adventure, making a visit to this state an unforgettable experience. From the desert landscapes of Monument Valley to the grandeur of the Grand Canyon and the unique rock formations of Sedona, Arizona offers a truly breathtaking natural spectacle.

Traveling the legendary Route 66, exploring the ancient culture of the Native Americans at Mesa Verde, and immersing in vibrant cities like Phoenix and Tucson will enrich your vacation with fascinating contrasts.

The warm, star-filled desert nights, fiery sunsets, and outdoor activities make Arizona a paradise for nature lovers. In just 5 days, you can live a unique experience, filled with thrilling adventures and stunning landscapes, turning your Arizona itinerary into a vacation to remember.

EDITOR'S NOTE: We always recommend considering the climate and season; Arizona experiences torrid heat with temperatures exceeding 104°F (40°C) from July to August..

DAY 1 – Tucson and Saguaro Park

Your Arizona journey should undoubtedly start in Tucson, a vibrant and colorful city in the Southwest United States, nestled in the vast Sonoran Desert. The city's culinary scene is ever-growing, and the Hotel Congress (where we recommend staying) offers quaint accommodations with a concert hall, club, and bistro. The hotel radiates vintage charm and a quintessential rock-and-roll vibe. The rooms are fully renovated but enriched with period details like iron beds and transistor radios in place of televisions.

In the nearby Saguaro National Park, witness the imposing saguaro cactus, the sovereign of the Sonoran Desert, in its natural habitat. Then, take a hike up to the summit of Mount Lemmon, the highest point of the Santa Catalina Mountains, north of Tucson.

For lunch, Tucson Tamale is a must-visit, where you can savor authentic regional flavors, with options like the traditional red chili beef tamale or the vegan blue corn and vegetable tamale. Later, why not book a tasting at Whiskey Del Bac, followed by a dinner with panoramic desert views and live music at The Grill at Hacienda Del Sol? A great way to enjoy local dishes during your Arizona itinerary.

DAY 2 – From Tucson to Scottsdale on the road

Scottsdale, a pleasant oasis on the edge of the Valley of the Sun, is less than two hours from Tucson and 20 minutes from Phoenix. Here, you can explore luxury shops, renowned wellness centers, and adventurous hiking trails.

Route 79 is the most scenic route between the two destinations, passing by the ruins of Casa Grande, one of the largest prehistoric structures in the Americas. The tour is free, led by volunteers who are experts in the history of the Sonoran Desert. Other outdoor attractions include the Desert Botanical Garden and Camelback Mountain. Witness cacti and colorful wildflowers during these outdoor hikes, an essential part of any Arizona itinerary.

For accommodation, the Bespoke Inn, a boutique hotel with 10 uniquely decorated rooms, is a top choice in the heart of Scottsdale. With high-quality amenities like a saltwater infinity pool and al fresco dining at the award-winning Virtu Honest Craft restaurant, it offers a personalized experience befitting the hotel's name. Other noteworthy dining options include Roaring Fork, a popular Old West-style gathering place. During happy hour, their famous hamburgers are just $13 each. After dinner, swing by Handlebar J for live country music, two-step dancing, and an extensive selection of draft beers. Scottsdale is a lively spot to appreciate during your Arizona itinerary!

DAY 3 – From Scottsdale to Sedona on the road

Sedona, beloved by spa lovers, art enthusiasts, and adventurers, is a two-hour drive from Scottsdale. Surrounded by red rocks, canyons, and pine forests, it boasts a unique culture blending the Wild West, mystical (especially crystal healing) elements, and discreet luxury. To reach it, take Highway 179, known as the Red Rock Scenic Byway.

A must-do in Sedona is hiking among the red rocks, followed by a visit to one of the city's renowned spas, a not-to-be-missed experience during your Arizona journey. Before leaving, check out Sedona Crystals at Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village and maybe end the day with tacos, nachos, and margaritas at the nearby Oaxaca Restaurant, offering vegetarian and vegan options.

DAY 4 – From Sedona to Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is an unmissable stop on your Arizona journey and just a two-hour drive from Sedona. Take 89A from Sedona and, if you wish, stop at Midgley Bridge, just outside the city, for a brief hike along Oak Creek Canyon.

After the hike, refuel in Flagstaff at Macy’s European Coffee House, where personalized coffee servings and healthy all-day breakfasts are served. Flagstaff is also home to Arizona's highest mountain, Humphreys Peak, and various Native American heritage sites, all interesting attractions to explore if you have extra time.

For an unforgettable experience, consider staying at El Tovar Hotel, a historic establishment that opened in 1905 and has hosted celebrities and presidents for over 100 years. Steps away from the "great chasm," El Tovar is elegant and rustic, with breathtaking views from every window. The resort's dining room, the closest to the canyon, offers authentic cuisine almost as memorable as the views from the window-side tables.

DAY 5 – From Grand Canyon to Page

Page, a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, is a three-hour drive north. Before visiting Page, it's worth stopping to admire Antelope Canyon, a unique sandstone formation encountered along 89A towards Nevada. Navigating the curves of this formation with a camera in hand, the wave-like structures and light filtering through the canyon's crevices appear almost like a photographic fantasy. The Wave is another iconic hike, but it requires obtaining a permit in advance.

For a peaceful and serene stay in the heart of the desert, booking at Lake Powell Resort is the best option. This establishment boasts old-world charm mixed with modern comforts, ideal for a relaxing stay.

Nearby, the BirdHouse offers some of Arizona's best comfort foods (like mac and cheese, waffles, mashed potatoes, and French fries). But the fried chicken is the star here, paired with homemade sauces like honey butter or buttermilk ranch, and a cold beer. The BirdHouse also features a wide selection of local beers.

The magic of Horseshoe Bend is just a short drive south of Page. This unusually shaped turn of the Colorado River is best appreciated from an overlook that rises over 4,000 feet above sea level. The easy trail from the parking lot to the overlook is less than a mile. As one of Arizona's most iconic landmarks, Horseshoe Bend is a natural wonder that should not be missed during a beautiful Arizona itinerary.

I’m the biggest fan of Fall activities, but haven’t had a chance to do anything beyond Apple Picking in NJ. I decided to take a last minute 2 day trip with a friend in Hudson Valley, but didn’t know where to start [...] Thankfully I was able to use New York Welcome to do the hard work for us [...]

Irene was a FANTASTIC tour guide! She was so knowledgeable about the area and was so patient with all our questions. We stopped to use the bathroom and we got coffee halfway through, she was so kind! It was a pleasure learning about Brooklyn from you!
